Why Plan a Winter Getaway to California?

Posted on: February 25th, 2016 by Brian McLaughlin No Comments

California is one of the most unique states in the U.S. We’ve got it all — from the Redwood Forest to the beaches along the coastline.

Here are five reasons to book a winter getaway to California:

1. The Redwood Forest features some of the oldest trees in the world. How’s that for some natural history? There are even hollow trees that visitors can walk and drive through.

2. California also has almost 300 state and national parks. For spectacular views, there’s no better place in the country! What better way to escape winter than by enjoying our stunning coastline beaches?

3. If you love nature, you have to see the butterflies in Pacific Grove! Each fall, beautiful monarchs migrate to our area in search of warmer weather. It’s quite a sight to see. But hurry — soon they’ll start their migration up north.

4. California’s “anything-goes” culture. We have world-class museums, robust communities, and music festivals like Coachella Valley Music. Plus, you can’t forget about our iconic surf culture and the stars of Hollywood.

5. Disneyland Park, because who can resist spending quality time with Mickey and Minnie? This magical escape was opened in 1955 under direct supervision of Walt Disney himself.

Tips for Booking a Weekend Getaway

Posted on: February 11th, 2016 by Brian McLaughlin No Comments

We all need to get away sometimes. If you’re saving up your vacation days, why not take advantage of a long weekend? Booking a weekend getaway might be exactly what the doctor ordered.

No matter where you’re going, follow these tips for a unforgettable weekend away:

1. Plan ahead

A last-minute weekend getaway sounds exciting, but may not always be plausible. Booking in advance will ensure you get the room you want for a fair price. If spontaneity is your thing, book your hotel in advance, but keep your schedule open for impromptu activities!

2. Don’t check a bag

Even if you’re going away for a long weekend, you’re going to be pressed for time. If you check your luggage, you’ll waste precious time and energy at the airport. Pack light and make the most of your carry on bag!

3. Get close to the action

Book your stay somewhere fun and “close to the action“! You don’t want to have to travel too far for activities and attractions. For instance, the Butterfly Grove Inn is just next door to the Monarch Grove Sanctuary and blocks away from beautiful beaches.

Ready to plan the perfect weekend getaway? Come and enjoy our natural oasis, and surround yourself with the serenity of birdsong and butterflies. To make a reservation, give us a call at 831-250-8191.

Motels vs. Hotels: Is There a Difference?

Posted on: February 4th, 2016 by Brian McLaughlin No Comments

There are varying opinions about whether or not there’s a difference between motels and hotels. In fact, a Google search for “motels vs. hotels” brings up dozens of discussion boards dedicated to the topic.

For example, Reddit user gtbuzzed offered this simple (and popular) explanation:

Motels have doors that open to the exterior. Hotels have lobbies and hallways with interior entry.

Logical as they might sound, these definitions don’t necessarily apply today. After all, a business can brand itself as a motel, hotel or inn as it sees fit. Let’s dig a little bit deeper. Here’s what Merriam-Webster has to say about the two different terms:

Hotel (noun): a place that has rooms in which people can stay especially when they are traveling

Motel (noun): a place that is next to a road and that has rooms for people to stay in especially when they are traveling by car

The dictionary makes no mention of architectural differences, instead focusing on purpose.  USA Today echoes this sentiment, noting that motels offer “some, but not necessarily all of the services associated with a hotel.” For example, hotels generally employ a larger staff, and are therefore able to better tend to their guests.

Here at the Butterfly Grove Inn, we like to think we’re a hotel, motel and inn all wrapped into one. We offer a variety of lodging options suitable for any California traveler! View our photo gallery for a peek at our accommodations, and call 831-250-8191 to make a reservation.
