Calling all ballet lovers! It’s that time of year again when one of the best holiday traditions returns to Monterey — The Nutcracker is back! If you’re looking for the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit, there’s no better way to do so than with a few tutus and a full orchestra playing Tchaikovsky.
A Monterey Twist on a Classic
This production of The Nutcracker features over 100 dancers and actors, 39 musicians with a maestro, 10 professional stagehands and technicians, and more than 120 volunteers that all work to bring the Tchaikovsky classic to life!
Each year the Monterey County Pops! Orchestra adapts the show to have the sets reflect Monterey scenery and locations and the characters reflect famous locals — making the production all the more special for Monterey residents and visitors.
For those who aren’t familiar with The Nutcracker’s storyline but are looking for a little entertainment, here’s a Cliff Note’s version of what to expect:
After being given a special doll for Christmas, Clara finds herself amidst a battle between the Mouse King, the Nutcracker, and their respective armies. Once the Mouse King is defeated, the Nutcracker, now a handsome prince, invites Clara to journey with him to the Land of the Sweets where she encounters the Sugar Plum Fairy and all those who dwell there.
