Budget Travel Tips

Posted on: October 29th, 2015 by Brian McLaughlin No Comments

Vacationing doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. Savvy travelers know thrifty ways to make your dollar stretch, no matter where you’re headed. Follow these budget travel tips for a trip that’s both affordable and memorable:

Budget Travel Tips - Carmel CA Motels

-Stay away from touristy restaurants. They’re often expensive and rarely live up to the hype. Find out where the locals go — you’ll find better food that costs less, too.

-Travel in the off-season. This will depend on your final destination, so do a little research. You’ll get more affordable airfare, cheaper hotel rooms and fewer crowds during the quiet months.

-Avoid renting a car. If you can get away with it, opt for walking or public transportation. You shouldn’t have too much trouble with this, especially if you’re visiting major cities.

-Reach out to local friends and family. Reuniting with local connections is a surefire way to see the sights without spending a fortune. These people know the area in and out, and will have lots of money-saving tips to offer.

-Travel light. Some airlines don’t allow for any checked luggage, so keep that in mind while budgeting. One bag per person should be just right.

-Find alternate airports. The closest and biggest airport is also often the most expensive. However, be sure to factor in the time and cost of transportation to get there.

Pacific Grove, California: A Brief History

Posted on: October 22nd, 2015 by Brian McLaughlin No Comments

Once called the “Piney Paradise,” Pacific Grove, California has a rich history. Its roots can be traced back to the the mid-1800s, when nearby Monterey was already a lively harbor. It wasn’t until 1855, when the Point Pinos Lighthouse was built, that the city of Pacific Grove started growing in population.

Pacific Grove, California - A Brief History - Pacific Grove Inns

In 1875, local businessman David Jacks founded the Pacific Grove Retreat Association. It wasn’t until observers began more frequently gathering in this area that its large numbers of Monarch Butterflies were first truly appreciated.

By the year 1889, Pacific Grove was finally incorporated as an official city. Decades later, the world-famous Holman’s Department was built. After that point, the city’s quiet popularity increased. Artists and writers, such as John Steinbeck, were drawn to the area for its beauty and serenity.

The City of Pacific Grove now has a whopping 1,200 historic properties on its official Historic Register. It’s also home to six structures that have secured a spot on the National Historic Register. Some areas, like Pacific Grove’s historic downtown, are still being used as originally intended!

We at the Butterfly Grove Inn are proud to call Pacific Grove home. We encourage you to visit nearby attractions, such as the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History, to get a taste and feel of what the city’s all about.

Taking a Holiday with Your Pet

Posted on: October 15th, 2015 by Brian McLaughlin No Comments

With the holiday season fast approaching, you might already be making plans and booking flights. But what will you do with your four-legged family members? You shouldn’t have to leave them behind!

Dog in the Car

Here at the Butterfly Grove Inn, your dogs are welcome. We have a beautiful facility with phenomenal walking areas nearby.

If you do plan on taking your furry friend with you on your holiday travels, follow these tips:

1. Schedule a checkup. You want to make sure your pet is fit to fly before taking off. If your trusty companion is very young, very old, or feeling under the weather, it’s best to leave him at home.

2. Find the right airline. Unfortunately, not all companies allow pets on planes. Others will let you bring your little critter — for a price. Figure out which airline is the best fit for your situation. You may also want to investigate pet-only airlines!

3. Purchase a carrier. No matter your pet’s size, you can find a great carrier in either hard-sided or soft-sided. However, you should look up the size restrictions of the airline you choose to make sure it will fit underneath the seat Otherwise, your dog will have to travel in the cargo hold.

Heading to Pacific Grove, California for the holidays? We are happy to have your travel companion check in with you for a small fee per night. To learn more, give us a call at 831-250-8191 or visit the Butterfly Grove Inn online.

Don’t Forget to Pack These Vacation Items

Posted on: October 1st, 2015 by Brian McLaughlin No Comments

We’ve recently covered what not to pack for your next trip. Today, however, we’re going to discuss items that people tend to forget! Don’t leave home without the following:

Open red suitcase with clothing in the room

-Cell phone charger – Let’s be honest: We depend on our phones for so much more than calls. Without your smartphone, how would you get around, check Facebook and take photos? Pack your charger right now!

-Bathing suit – If you’re headed somewhere warm, like sunny California, be sure to pack your swimsuit. Depending on when you’re traveling, you might not be able to find one in stores. Even if you do find a shop selling bathing suits, it’ll cut into your vacation spending budget.

-Something warm – On the flip side, you should also pack something warm in case of cooler-than-usual weather. For example, here in Pacific Grove, temperatures dip to the 50s on an October night. Pack a light jacket or sweater — just in case.

-First aid & toiletries – Travelers often forget bug spray, adhesive bandages, aloe gel, stomach medicine and pain killers. Hopefully you won’t need any of these items, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Don’t forget the basics, either — toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, razors, contact lenses, prescriptions, hair brushes, sunscreen, etc.

-Headphones – For a lot of us, there’s nothing worse than traveling without a good pair of ear buds. How else are you supposed to drown out noisy travelers, listen to tunes and pass the time? In fact, you might want to pack a couple of sets of headphones.
